Engine oil is the lifeblood of your car's engine, and choosing the right type of oil is crucial for ensuring its longevity and performance. However, with so many different oil specifications and viscosities to choose from, it can be confusing to know which one is best for your vehicle. Viscosity

The first number in the viscosity rating refers to the oil's cold-temperature performance, while the second number refers to its hot-temperature performance.

API Service Classification


The American Petroleum Institute (API) assigns a Service Classification to every engine oil, which indicates its performance level. The API classification system ranges from SA to SN and includes several subcategories. The latest classification, as of my knowledge cut-off date, is SN, which indicates that the oil meets the latest industry standards for performance and protection.


It's important to choose an oil with an API classification that is appropriate for your vehicle and its age. You can usually find the recommended API classification in your vehicle's owner's manual or by checking with a mechanic.


Manufacturer-Specific Requirements


In addition to the API classification and viscosity, some vehicle manufacturers have their own specific requirements for engine oils. For example, some carmakers may require an oil that meets certain performance standards, such as GM's dexos1 specification. To ensure the best performance and protection for your vehicle, it's important to choose an oil that meets both the API classification and any manufacturer-specific requirements.
